News – 20 March 2009

Race entry.

Race entry opened on 3 March with 2000 placed on-line and postal entry forms with athletics clubs, libraries, leisure centres and also published in the Journal.  The online entries were all taken up in around 12 hours and the race is now full to capacity.

We are currently processing the 4000 entries which we can accept but unfortunately, a significant number will not be successful.  These will have their payment cheques returned shortly.

Boyzone Concert, Newcastle Arena, 7.30pm 9th June 2009

You wouldn’t believe Boyzone would come along and clash with our event, would you?  Well, they have and it has given us a headache.

They expect 5000 concert goers to arrive between 6.30 and 7.30 and most of them will come into the city by road.  We will have road closures in place for the race which passes very close the Arena just before the first mile point.  So we have 5000 Boyzone fans and up to 4000 Blaydon runners converging on Railway Street at about the same time.

We are having talks with the Arena management, Newcastle City Council and Northumbria Police to plan for safe management of traffic, runners and concert goers.  We (or Boyzone) may have to adjust our Start time a little.  We’ll publicise the final arrangements once they are settled.
